Applying IEC 61499 for Offshore Operations

Challenge

Trisystems Engineering undertook a modernization project on a 30-year-old offshore platform. The legacy system, based on IEC 61131 standards, had operated reliably for over a decade despite limited power and bandwidth in hazardous zones. Aging hardware and increasing operational demands prompted the need for an upgrade.

Benefits
  • Cross-platform compatibility
  • Faster local decisions via edge computing
  • Efficient bandwidth use with event-driven control
  • Proactive maintenance
  • Less on-site servicing  for improved safety and efficiency
Details

The team transitioned to an IEC 61499-based automation system, which offers a modular, event-driven approach to distributed control.

The upgrade enabled safer, more efficient operations in remote and hazardous environments. It also reduced the need for on-site servicing—previously, a 4-hour boat ride was required for a 15-minute task.
